Hump Links: Past few Days and Beyond

August 15, 2007

I’ve been a little busy and haven’t been able to get to some things, even though there hasn’t been much going on lately with the CATS.

Anyway…

Here’s my weekly ‘Hump Links’. It’s not too much, but it’s something.

We get some recruiting updates
Nemanja Calasan, who was headed to Utah, but was given a release from his LOI, has decided on signing with Purdue.

Scottie Hopson was tempted, but is deciding to stick with Mississippi State.

Chris Diggs has more recruiting news on the likes of Ralph Sampson III, Willie Warren and Darius Miller, including buzz from possible visits this past weekend.

Coaching Clinic
The 2007 Billy Gillispie Kentucky Basketball Clinic will be held at Memorial Coliseum on Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20.

This sounds nice

Fore
Fuzzy Zoeller hopes to add a High Profile coach to his Wolf Challenge, such as Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie.

Can coach find the time to play golf?

Battle of the Bluegrass blood donor challenge
Show your love for The University of Kentucky, while helping out others.

The University of Kentucky Alumni Association is facing off against the University of Louisville Alumni Association in a Battle of the Bluegrass blood donor challenge held in conjunction with Kentucky Blood Center.

Blue blood jokes…anyone?

Rivals Update
Rivals updated their Rivals150 for the class of 2008.

Of Kentucky interest include…

  • #12 overall, previously #13 - Willie Warren [Kentucky on list)
  • #21 overall, previously #19 - DeAndre Liggins (Kentucky)
  • #25 overall, previously #21 - Jamychal Green (Kentucky on list)

Chris Diggs also has more on this, including more players from all the rumors mills.

Cats in action
Over at Jody Demling’s blog we get word that some future Kentucky players, and possible potential targets for the cats will be in action on January 4th.

Kentucky commitment DeAndre Liggins, along with possible future UK targets Clarence Trent and Deividas Dulkys, will play Western Reserve Academy from Ohio Lexington Christian High School.

Also of interest is verbally committed Dakotah Euton, who will also be in action when Rose Hill will take on Lexington Christian.

Gridiron Tactics
Gary Parrish has a story on coach Billy Gillispie’s idea of using football principles to get more players involved in basketball games.

You just make up reasons for people to be a part of the team,” Gillispie said. “I think it helps team chemistry.”

(Interesting idea, he might have something here.)

SWOT
Tru, over at A Sea of Blue gives his ‘SWOT Analysis‘ on coach Billy Gillispie. This after reading Marc Maggard’s article on Gillispie not landing a big man yet for the Cats.

Updates on Recruits
Chris Diggs has updates on some recruiting targets for the cats.

We learn that Leonard Washington’s grades are in order, his next step in going through the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Diggs notes that Kentucky may be cooling off on Washington because of another recruit that may be close to enrolling. No solid name yet, but there is speculation. Hmmm

GOTW
If you haven’t already, go check out Wildcats Thunder Blog’s ‘Game of The Week‘.

It’s the 1978 match-up between the Kentucky Wildcats and Kansas Jayhawks.

The Little Roundup

August 5, 2007

Blue Alert!, Blue Alert!
Tru, over at A Sea of Blue sums up my feelings on how some in the Big Blue Nation need to calm down, relax and take a deep breath.

We can’t and shouldn’t expect to land every single recruit out there. We are fine…really! There is simply no need to panic, these things happen.

Rondo, Cha-cha-cha-changes
Mark Story has a piece on former Cat Rajon Rondo, how he has the chance to shine and become one of the premier point guards in the league.

Also of interest…

When the new Kentucky basketball roster is released, there will be some number changes.

  • Michael Porter will go from No. 1 to No. 13
  • Jodie Meeks switches No. 20 to No. 23
  • Ramon Harris goes from No. 22 to No. 34.

Numbers for the new guys

  • Alex Legion will wear No. 1
  • A.J. Stewart No. 15
  • Michael Williams No. 25
  • Patrick Patterson No. 54

27 Questions
Wildcats Thunder Blog has an interview with The Courier-Journal’s Jody Demling, where he answers questions concerning both Kentucky basketball and football.

To air
ESPN is picking up Kentucky’s home game against San Diego on December 29th.

This adds another nationally televised game for the Cats, which stands at 18 for the regular season.

The game will be airing at 2pm.

Who’s Now?
You’ve seen ESPN’s ‘Who’s Now?’ and if you’re like me, you probably think ‘Who Cares?’

Anyway…

Jack’s Sports Humor decided to look at future possibilities and potential winners.

Making the list…

Recruiting Update

August 2, 2007

We can’t win them all!

Some recruiting news coming out is that…

Terrance Jennings has decided on a quick commitment, but not to Kentucky, to Maryland.

Also that Olek Czyz narrowed his list, unfortunately Kentucky didn’t make it. (Many on the message boards etc. were hoping to land him)

and then word comes out that JaMychal Green has also left Kentucky off his updated list.

Don’t fret Cat Fans, there are other fish out there to be had.

Chuck Hayes - New Contract and a Commercial

August 1, 2007

Thanks to 2ndstorylloyd for passing this along.

The Chinese love Chuck!

Former Kentucky Wildcat favorite Chuck Hayes apparently has a shoe endorsement deal from the Chinese.

Here he is featured in a commercial with none other than the big man himself…Shaquille O’Neal.

In other Chuck Hayes news…

Chuck and the Houston Rockets have agreed on a new four-year contract to keep him with the Rockets.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey…

Hayes was a critical component in the Rockets’ success last season.”

With this agreement we are thrilled we will have Chuck as part of our core for some time.”

Congrats to Chuck and his family!

Hump Links - Start of August Edition

August 1, 2007

August has finally arrived, oh how time flies.

The start of a new basketball season is slowly inching closer upon us.

In the meantime…

Here is this week’s edition of ‘Hump Links’.

No Regrets
K.C. Ross-Miller has no regrets in committing early to Kentucky.

I know most guys don’t commit this early, but I felt like it was just a great situation. Coach Gillispie treated me right, and I just think it was the best thing for me to do. I am excited.”

A Good Change?
Former Kentucky Wildcat Bobby Perry was recently questioned and asked… Was Tubby Smith leaving Kentucky a good change for the UK basketball program?

I do think it was good. I think this time not only will guys buy into the program, but also they’ll buy into Billy Gillispie and the guys he brought with him to coach. I don’t know how one human being withstood the pressure coach Smith did for as long as he did. It’s probably good for him, too, to go to Minnesota and have a new challenge to get him going.”

Overrated
Jody Demling gives his list of the ‘Most Overrated‘ Kentucky recruits ever.

I won’t spoil it, so go take a look and see if you agree.

Notables
Dan Wiederer has some notable observations from the AAU events out on Vegas.

The story mentions that Chris Singleton, who was the Adidas tournament’s MVP, has Kentucky in his final five

Class of 2008
According to Scout.com…Kentucky shouldn’t expect a verbal from Terrance Jennings anytime soon, but if they can manage an early commitment, they should take it and run.

Scout ranks Jennings as the #12 center in the class of 2008.

His top three consist of Kentucky, Maryland and Washington.

The Prince
Wildcats Thunder Blog has their ‘Game of The Week‘.

This week features the contest between Kentucky and UNC from 2001.

If you remember this like I do, then you will know this was the game that Tayshaun Prince simply layeth the smackdown on the Tarheels.
